Arizona 2024 - Cactus Edition 🌵

Before my birthday trip to Arizona, I’d always heard not only how beautiful it is there, but also how “it’s all the same color palette and not many plants.”

Matter of opinion I guess, because throughout my time in Tucson, I honestly felt so inspired and saw many different plants growing, along with LOTS of cacti of course, so I wanted to capture them in a different way.

From the Sabino Canyon Crawler in the mountains, to hikes at Sabino State Park, to wandering around random trails, these cacti started to feel as familiar to me as the trees do here in the Midwest.

Someone on our tour told me each little arm of a cactus can be around 100 years old! That blew my mind. 🤯

What’s sad is that many of these cacti used to grow like weeds, covering the ground. Now they take decades upon decades, upwards of hundreds of years to grow and are disappearing even quicker than we think. Hearing that made me appreciate every single plant I saw even more.

Like our big beautiful old trees, these cacti have weathered storms, were here long before us, and grow in the wild in unexpected shapes and places. Seeing them up close felt spiritual.

This cactus series is my way of sharing that experience I felt.
The colors, shapes, and Arizona’s desert life.

Behind the scenes of preparing for 3 sessions (7 looks) this weekend 👀

My apartment currently looks like a tornado hit…

Don’t worry though, when I have clients over the mess is gone and it magically looks like a normal apartment / studio again. I’m just really good at pack rating everything away. 🫣

Hey there, it’s the face behind the camera 😊

I’ve been a photographer for 8 years but this was the first time I TRULY invested in professional branding photos for myself. Not for a trade/favor, or a discount.

I found Angie on Instagram, not sure when. But since discovering her, I have always felt drawn to her creativity and the way she sees people through her lens. It felt aligned.

And for what felt like the first time, I got to fully sit on the other side of the camera and be told what to do rather than me coming up with all the ideas. It was uncomfortable at first but in the best way.

These are just a few favorites from the session (saving the rest for later😉) I’m so grateful I did this for myself.

Another wedding moment I will forever be obsessed with...

The dollar dance.

I am already in love with the energy of wedding dance floor photos, but the dollar dance feels different. It’s not just about tradition, or a fun thing to do.

Again, it's one of those built in moments in your day where you get one on one time with the people you love.

Your grandparents, cousins, siblings, parents, your new in-laws, and a childhood best friend.

When else in your life are you going to dance with each of them on a more important day?

I’m not ashamed to say that I will tear up at any wedding. During your first look, vows, the first kiss after your ceremony, meaningful speeches, and all the first dances. And this moment too. The dollar dances.

It’s a room full of people who showed up for you, quite literally stepping forward one by one to celebrate you.

And those are the moments you’ll feel and remember forever.

A thing I always ask my wedding couples as a photographer is...

"What are you doing immediately after your ceremony?"
(Not just timeline wise.)

Do you want some moments of alone time together?
Are you running off with your wedding party to celebrate?
Heading straight for the reception?
Spending time with family?

I also ask how guests are being dismissed after the ceremony.

Are you planning to dismiss guests row by row yourselves, or having ushers guide them out? Doing a greeting line or skipping it entirely?

And more often than not I hear:
“Wow… I never even thought about that.”

Those in between moments do matter.

I’ve heard photographers say, “Oh no… not another greeting line. It takes forever.”

And yes, it can. It’s not suppose to be fast. But when you look at the wedding day as a whole it was only a small fragment of what happened.

It’s also one of the only times you’re 100% guaranteed a moment with every single guest who showed up for you for your ceremony.

It’s where:
• You can hug your grandma a little longer.
• Your friend whispers something that makes you both cry and laugh.
• Your partner’s uncle tells a story you’ve never heard before.
• You actually will get a photo with all the people who matter. Who showed up for you on your big day.

So often couples tell me after their wedding, “We barely got to talk to anyone...”

This is one of the few built in opportunities to slow down and do exactly that.

I LIVE for candid moments like this as a photographer!

If you want this time, take it.
If you’ve never considered it, maybe consider how it could feel.
And if someone tells you it takes too long? Well…you typically get this day only once, so do whatever the heck you want.

If it matters to you, and it would make you happy, nothing will ever take too long. ❤
